Memory is a reconstruction of what we believe we remember—a collaboration of lived experiences, inherited stories, and fragments of moments preserved in the mind. In Home, I create a series of fictional family portraits by combining scanned archival photographs of my relatives in Vietnam with images of family homes I have photographed throughout Los Angeles. These constructed portraits form a substitute family album, imagining new relationships between people, places, and histories shaped by migration and displacement. The work reflects on the experiences of families and individuals forced to leave their homes in search of refuge, and the longing to preserve a sense of belonging across geographic and generational distances. By fabricating these intimate yet unfamiliar scenes, I explore the fluid boundaries between memory and imagination, presence and absence, and the meaning of home. The resulting images bridge past and present, asking what came before, what has been left behind, and what remains possible in the lives we continue to build.
