Notes: A Conversation
In A Conversation, a scanner becomes a camera, capturing the backs of my family photographs and creating a dialogue with appropriated images from a Vietnam War photobook. Intentionally presented face down, the photographs conceal the people depicted, revealing instead traces of discoloration, deterioration, and handwritten notes left behind over time. Viewers encounter the aged surfaces of these tangible objects, where the marks of time and handling become records of personal and collective history. By obscuring the original images, the work draws attention to the materiality of the photograph and the stories embedded within family archives, reflecting on memory, absence, and the histories that remain unseen or untold.
